It is said that the German band Fooks Nihil came out of nowhere all of a sudden, but isn’t that pretty true about every band that starts out their album or release history? It is true in this case, the debut is a self-titled release with a fairly retro-looking artwork and ten tracks that ends with Long Days. They are said to draw influences from the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Neil Young, The Byrds and that sort of thing, another band looking in the rear-view mirror?

60’s rock or folk rock says the press sheet about the style of this album, retro rock or déjà vu-rock is probably also okay to use as description as this band isn’t exactly coming up with anything we haven’t heard before. Perhaps you can look at it as something that has been brought from the past, then renovated with a fresher production. You don’t really get the sense of creativity here, or novelty, it sounds very familiar. The production is good, variation decent, and I like the vocals that are really good.

This is a good album; it has good songs and can be quite enjoyable to listen to. The argument against is the lack of novelty but also that it doesn’t feel like the most memorable album I have ever heard. That lack of memorability might overshadow the feeling of this album, but there are some fairly memorable songs like the opening track Insight of Love and the fourth track Lady From a Small Town, these are the highlights of this album, that I find to be pretty decent overall.

It is one for those of you enjoying the retro style of rock music, it will probably not be disappointing to anyone but many of us will probably be relatively indifferent towards this album. It is an album that is nice to listen to but that might not make any lasting impression, but if you are a fan of the retro rock music it might be an album for you to check out.
