Italian heavy metallers Half Life are offering their first release, a four-track EP that plays for about 20 minutes. It is called I’ve Got to Survive and it has a heavy metallic cover, I guess it is typical in a way. It is a must for fans of bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon and that kind of bands. Many bands are inspired those and they sound about the same, so what about Half Life? And starting with an EP, is it worth checking out or would it be better to await a debut album?

They play pretty standardised heavy metal, pretty catchy etc. They do have some spoken word parts, in Italian, that is somewhat spicing it up but the four tracks offers very little variation otherwise so it is fortunate that the album is short. There isn’t much to spice up the music or much variation here, something that can appear a bit detrimental towards the album – the lack of depth and ideas could be problematic if they want to make more than a marginal impact.

It is a pretty okay album, not too much to complain about but the four tracks feels like they would have fitted as fillers on an album, with four better tracks combined with these four they can make a very strong debut album but with four more tracks like these it would be a rather dull album instead. The main issue is the lack of originality though, sure it presses the right button for the fans of previously mentioned bands but so do a whole lot of other bands and albums as well and some of them are way more exciting than this one.

Not a bad start for Half Life, they have done a well-produced little EP, it lacks the strongest hit songs and it really needs that. So yes, it would have been wiser to await a debut album that hopefully contains that hit songs that can spice up the decent tracks that makes out this little EP, because if they do want to survive in the very saturated world of music they need to make something a lot more exciting than this EP.
