Danish modern rock music of American style is how you could describe the debuting quartet Black Oak County’s self titled debut album. “By drawing inspiration from their musical heroes, while combining big, catchy choruses and supermassive, heavy riffs, with plenty of guitar solos, the band combine all these ingredients to brew their very own hard rocking moonshine, that’ll leave any listener with an insatiable thirst for more” says the press sheet and after listening to the album I am bound to disagree with that. I don’t feel a thirst for more, I feel finished with it and am happy to put it away for good.

Modern rock music, kind of in the American way with a straightforward style where they make simple choruses that probably is meant to make you sing along. I do not sing along though, I just listen and hear a soundscape that feels rather typical of an album in this style and the same can be said about the vocalist who doesn’t really engage me with his style of singing. And the album’s variation is more or less what you can expect so what we get are no surprises and a pretty cautious album that doesn’t dare to venture anywhere interesting.

I would describe it as a half-decent album, you can listen to it without feeling that it stinks but there is nothing that catches your attention and in the end it leaves you with a somewhat empty feeling. None of the songs stand out and the album leaves me rather unimpressed when I reach the end, not even the artwork is anything to write home about. The only song that makes something of an impact is the sixth track that is about rednecks; perhaps the biggest audience for an album like this.

It is a debut that doesn’t make any impact on me; now that I am done with it I leave it in the archive where the albums I will never play again end up. This one really fails to make an impression on me, I saw two positive reviews of it when I researched on the interweb but it would appear that it is a rather unimpressive debut all in all. The prevailing feeling that I have when the album comes towards its end is a big tired yawn.
