One thing that tends to strike me when I listen to music of a certain genre is how anyone can actually claim to like it, note that I write claim as it is beyond my comprehension that anyone can actually like primitive black metal. Kaeck is a Dutch black metal band that are said to desire to follow the traditional path of primeval and pure black metal – talk about not having any desire whatsoever, anyone can do that. The cover with logo and all certainly looks the part and this is their debut album that was really released in 2015 but the limited cassette comes today.

It appears aimed at the purist of the genre, guess they do exist somewhere where the sun never shines as it keeps coming albums like this all the time – the strangest thing is that all these albums sounds the same. It sounds like it was recorded on tape in some very damp and mouldy basement, recorded on substandard equipment with a vocalist that would do better as raven impersonator rather than vocalist in a band. Monotonous is the first name of how it sounds, it is six tracks on the album but it is the same song repeating over and over but maybe with different lyrics. It is simply what you can expect from a band wanting to make pure old-fashioned black metal, not really the bravest or most interesting production I have heard in my life.

It is insanely boring and it never ends despite a playing time that is much less than the year it seems to take to play through it. It is almost a superhuman task to play through this album and still be awake when it ends. By the way, the best part of this album is that it ends so now you know that there is no point playing it. It just sounds like they didn’t really bother with production or song writing, it is just the same copy-paste kind of black metal as every other band and album in this genre and if you have heard one you have heard them all, Kaeck offers nothing, I repeat absolutely nothing, new or worthwhile.

So what can one really conclude? I don’t want to just write bad things about bands that pour their soul into their music but when listening to this album it is hard to believe that they have made any effort at all – It probably too them as long to conceive and record this album as it takes to play it. But sure, there will be some lost souls that claims to like the album, that claims it has many good qualities and so on – then you should remember that there are also people who claim that Skoda, Dacia or Kia are good cars and that Donald Trump is a legitimate candidate for US president – stupidity and lack of taste will always exist and that is something to be grateful to if you are a member of the band Kaeck.
