Ukraine is a pretty common subject of news and conversation these days, and now I happened to stumble upon a band from that place. Before the awful Russian population decided to invade Ukraine they did make some music there, and one of the bands from there happens to be Mental Torment who are now releasing their second album Ego:Genesis. It is an album with a cover that is a bit remnant of Greek stylings, not the greatest but nor the worst cover I have seen; and in a way it illustrates what we get to hear on this album.

It is death/doom metal with a powerful and dark sound, the vocals are morose and growly and the tempo of the songs is low. It may not be a very dynamic album, but the depth and the atmospheres are well crafted and makes the album feel like a very well-made production. If you have heard this kind of music before you may not find this album overly exciting as it is not breaking new ground or anything, but it is always good when bands that aren’t ground-breaking make really good albums.

It is a doomy and gloomy album that presses all the right buttons for the genre, it is dark and powerful with interesting atmospheres. The songs are good throughout, and I have few things that I can complain about, but of course there are a few things that could have been done better as there always are. I don’t think this album is lacking in any meaningful way, but if you want to point at a thing that is missing it would be that outstanding highlight song that would have elevated this to an even higher level – but it is good without it.

If you like the style of music, or just like doom and gloom, you should find this album to be very agreeable. It is worth checking out if you are a fan of that kind of music, as this is an album showcasing a good band showing off their skills. And even though it helps a lot bringing novelty to the scene you can make a successful album without it, as Mental Torment successfully demonstrate. It is well worth checking out Ego:Genesis.
