Morrigan’s Dawn comes up with a new album, and they have certainly taken their sweet time between the albums considering that the previous one was released in 2012. So, the fans had to wait quite a while for this new effort called I’m Gold, I’m God, a very confident title. There is nothing wrong with confidence of course, but do they have what it takes to back it up?

Doom or gothic metal is the style, reminiscent of the similar bands mentioned in the upper section. The tempo is low and the mood a bit dark without much variation, or dynamics. The moods are pretty interesting, the vocals pretty common style to the genre, and so is the quality of sound. In terms of originality they haven’t got too much to offer, although some Italian lyrics make it a little more interesting.

I don’t think the band really sell the one-hour playing time, it is too much. Perhaps with a more dynamic sound it would have been possible to keep the grip over the listener for longer, but not as it is. I think they should have explored some darker moods in order to create a more dynamic soundscape, it could increase the quality of the album. That and a stronger song that captures the listener’s imagination would have made all the difference for this album, with that it could have been great rather than just good.

In the end this might not be the most interesting album ever released, fans of the similar bands should have a look at it, but I doubt it is an album that will make more than a minor impression. It is a good album, but the genre contains albums that are a lot more exciting than this one.
