Convertible, the Austrian, German band, continues their story about Colin Holst with Holst Gate II. The previous part was released in 2018. This new part contains a world that according to Holst is less upbeat than his earlier hopes when the previous part was released. It is more fatalistic and contains a bigger band as well as a bolder sound. We here at Hallowed always like a bolder sound, and we are of the variety of people who like to listen to complete albums that are carefully built from start to finish, like this album has been according to the press release.

Musically it is an album that feels built around the story, and not so much around more accessible hit songs although there are a few with hit potential. Pretty classic rock/hardrock but spiced up with the storytelling aspect and some brass to add more depth to the sound. I think the album is pretty varied and the playing time is quite sensible, a good production. I am not sure that I like the vocalist, not sure I dislike him either – perhaps we can say that he is a bit so-so but alright for this album.

I find this Holst Gate II to be a good album, I like how the band have taken care to put together an album and not just a collection of songs like albums often are. I also like the conceptual idea and that they not just try to make simple and accessible songs, Everything and Everything is a song with hit potential and probably the one I like the best of the album. It is an album that can be worth checking out as it is very possible that you might like it.

I think Holst Gate II is a fine album, pretty enjoyable even though it may not be the most memorable album ever released. Still, it works fine and while more passion and dynamics wouldn’t have hurt, it is a good album to listen to and might be worth checking out.
