Hopeless but Hoping, is that really what Sheffield band Story are doing? That is at least what they call their second EP, and I can certainly state that I like the name but the question is whether or not I like the music. The cover I like, it is exciting and dreamy but it is also telling a story of someone looking towards a far away place. It is a six track EP that plays for 21 minutes and I can certainly say that it was very difficult to find any good information about the band as they don’t have a real website and isn’t that readily wrote about in terms of discography and stuff. Anyway, hopefully I got the facts right so lets move on to the music.

The music that can be described as post hardcore, or hardrock, metal or something like that – it is not always easy to find the right subgenre or genre nuance in that sort of thing. The similar bands probably give an indication of what kind of music you can expect. It is diverse hard rock music with good drive and variation and excellent vocalist with a strong range that fits this kind of music really well, and I should also point out that it is really well produced. I think that this EP can be described as a really solid production.

And it is not only a solid production; it is a solid EP that I would describe as very good. The tracks are solid, the variation and depth very strong and I like what I am hearing. Though it is not really grabbing me, I don’t know if it is just me or that the EP is missing some small nuance that I want to have but I can point out that at its best moments it is a wonderful record. But it is not as wonderful at other moments and I think it is best described as a seed of what is to come, if the band follows the path they are on. I think that these guys have a brilliant album in store and that their story will go on to include some very interesting stuff, but that is for the future to tell.

Article 10 that opens the EP is the best one on the EP; I think that any album or EP that begins with its highlight tends to become somewhat disappointing when nothing really matches the opening. Article 10 shows what kind of quality these guys are capable of, the other tracks are not bad either and if you are a fan of the similar bands or this kind of music I am sure you’ll find this EP quite appealing. I think it is a solid EP but feels that there is more to come from these guys. And I would say that they are certainly not hopeless and find myself hoping for a brief wait until I get to hear an album or EP from these guys.
