He is known as the voice of the king of the bathmats, he has a few albums with said bathmats behind him and now he is trying his hand at making his solo debut. John Basset is the singer of the british band KingBathmat, he is also songwriter and producer of said band so the music is something he knows very well it seems. Unearth is the name he has given his first solo effort and it is covered by a nice cover, it looks a bit exciting.

Beneath the cover there is an album of ten tracks and three quarters of an hour of progressive rock music. Kind of like KingBathmat but then again it is not like it at the same time, it is softer, more melodic, lower tempo and so on. Bassett’s voice is excellent for this, so is his production. Definitively a quality production. The music is varied and comes in many layers with much for you to discover no matter how many times you play the album. Bassett also has a strong narrative voice when telling his musical stories on this unearthly album. It is definitely an album that has the potential to appeal to Bassett’s fans and probably win some new ones as well.

Quality, that is the mark of this album, a high quality production and a high quality musical narrative. I think Bassett has managed to put together something very exciting, something very good. Impressive is a word I think can be used to describe this album, an impressive production and an impressive album. It has quality songs and it has depth enough to keep you occupied for a very long time, you can play it over and over if you want to and still not become tired of it as there is always something new to discover. Much like when you listen to Bassett’s main band which is much the same but still a bit different. I think this is great.

A well recommended album and the only slight niggle I have with it is that it starts with its best song, this leads you to waiting for some as brilliant to come along but it never does. This is not a massive problem though as the album is so good anyway and I can only state that if you call yourself a fan of progressive rock you really ought to check this one out. One of the best so far this year.
