The Return by Mongol looks rather exciting, at least the cover does. Their EP Warrior Spirit that was released in 2017 contains three of the songs from this album and it showed a fair bit of promise. Now seven more tracks have been added and we get a conceptual album about Mongol stuff where Dschingis Khan and other things are featured. So it looks quite promising from the outside, cover and all – but what about the music?

It is folk metal, I think it is remnant of other Mongol styled folk metal band but also other folk metallers like Enisferum and others. It is well made, well performed, well produced with decent variation and depth. The vocalist fits the style really well and I think they have a rather fresh appearance and ten tracks, three of which we heard on the EP that preceded the album. I think we can call this album rather fresh and the playing time feels rather sensible and I doubt anyone will think it is too long.

A good album, fun album, enjoyable to listen to with good songs, strong melodies and a fresh feel – it kind of has it all I guess. So I guess it was worth giving it a go despite it being released quite a while ago now, and I don’t think anyone checking it out will be disappointed, as it is an album that doesn’t really have much weakness. It has strong songs like Dschingis Khan and the opening pair, and as the seven tracks that fill up this album are better than the three tracks we got on the EP, it also means that the band has taken a leap forwards in terms of creating quality music. So, I would say that the experience of this album is very positive.

It is well worth checking out this album as it is really good and if you are a fan of the folk metal style you should definitely have a look at this one as you will most certainly enjoy it. So if you are one of this folk metal fans hand has missed this album until now, you should really have a closer look. This is really strong stuff and an adventure to enjoy.
