… now children, lets go on a little trip with our friend Pete. A death-trip in eight stages storytold in eight chapters written with a quill on papyrus where the author’s only light is the flickering of a candle that is being disturbed by his breath and the drafts that is so common in old stone houses. The cover of this Pete’s second book may not look that exciting to me but there are other things making me want to take a trip through darkness, cold and wolves that is being offered here.

The voice of the narrator may not really be that unique, but it is not a genre stereotype either so you sure can listen to his storytelling. The framework is doom and gloom or death metal with a melancholic atmospheric soundscape, quite an interesting musical painting and saga we are treated to here. The words flow from the papyrus as the trips gets further and further along its dark route that includes much cold and failing suns just to name a few things. There is much melancholy and darkness in this trip through a forever dark snowy landscape where the wolves and vultures just waits for those who don’t survive the journey, but there are hints of lights and flickers of hope to balance it all and give depth.

I think this is one hell of a trip, with refreshing darkness and melancholy that brightens up a drab and boring workdays full of stagnant and unoriginal boring things. But the genius of the journey is not in the melancholy, power, or darkness – it is in the fact that there is room for some hope and positive melodies as well, they are not many but they are there as an album of complete darkness or melancholy would be a complete waste. But at this time you are probably wondering if it is worth taking this deathtrip and if it is your cup of tea, so is it? I would say that it is, and a damn tasty cup at that, with a small sweetening of honey.

I think you ought to take this trip; it is an exciting, great and memorable one. The Winter of the Wolf is one you do not want to miss as it might be the best extreme metallish stuff I have heard in a long while. But it is not just that one and as the trip reaches its end in total darkness there is only one question remaing: where the hell am I? It is certainly not Narnia.
