Candyland is the new album by Theatres Des Vampires, a sexy looking album to brighten the usexy metal genre. Female fronted metal is what we have here, and from an experienced band with history going back to 1994, their debut album was released in 1996. Since then there have been a few more albums and this is their ninth if I have counted them correctly. It is said to be inspired by the infamous Pennhurst asylum, a madhouse – so maybe it is an album of a little bit of madness, or not.

It is gothic metal that is described by the label as “forceful yet sensual sound infused with melody and melancholic athmospheres”, a decent description of this album in my view. Good production, the sound of the album is strong and it has a relatively strong variation over the songs. The vocals from Sonya Scarlet are good but tend to be a bit stale in the long run and I think that the album should be benefitted with a bit more variation on the vocal side. I should also point out that it is a rather powerful album that has many strengths.

I think it is a solid album, it can feel a little stale but it works and if you are a fan of this kind of music chances are that you’ll find it agreeable. Thing is though that it could have been a little bit better had the vocals been more dynamic. Highlights include but are not limited to the second track Resurrection Mary and Opium Shades that are very strong tracks. Overall though I would say that the album is slightly above average but will hardly be remembered as one of the highlights of 2016. And more than that is not really needed to write about this album. It needs more suger and more insanity.
