A trio from Sheffield called Awooga, could that be something? That was the thought I had when taking on this four-track 26-minute EP that found its way into my mailbox some time ago. The promotion guy sells it as “sludge awesomeness” and that is a pretty good description of what we are getting with this title, perhaps a red vinyl copy of it could be a great Christmas gift for the music fan, but you’d better be quick if you want one as they are strictly limited.

Sludge is what it is all about, like a musical landscape painted in long, dramatic brush strokes. Exciting atmosphere, nice lowish tempo and a decent variation over the four tracks we get on this EP. It is an EP that is easy to take in and easy to like, much thanks to the great atmospheres and appealing soundscape. This soundscape goes a little bit on the darker side, but there is some humorous touches to their world which brings a little more depth to the story.

I would state that this is a very appealing first chapter in the story about Awooga, it looks pretty cool as well with an amusing cover art and that red vinyl package must be considered a very appealing prospect – I would have bought one if I had the finances for it. But I can recommend that you take a look at it, I really like what I hear and I don’t doubt that you will as well.

I would say that this EP works best as a whole and none of the tracks stand above the others, they are all very good and nothing stands out as weak. Perhaps that they should have put together one or two more tracks and made it into an album, if they had it would have been a no-brainer to buy that lovely vinyl package. In the end though I can only recommend this and conclude that this inaugural chapter by Awooga can be described as sludge awesomeness.
