Small white birds, that is an amusing name for a band – a German band nonetheless. The title is pretty German on the band’s debut album called Sound der Generation, I think you can imagine what that means. They are describing it as punk rock with a dose of rock ’n’ roll, which actually sounds pretty exciting. Other than that I am not finding too much information on theis band around the interweb but I did find out that they have made an EP before this album and was formed just a few years ago.

I think that they musically reminds me a bit about another German band singing in German, Unherz whom we have reviewed many times here at Hallowed. Simplistic punkish rock music with catchy choruses, good energy and emotion and a modern sound and is very easily accessible for any listener. Straight to the point and as expected after hearing the first tones, no surprises is a thing that can be said about this album stylistically. Even the variation over the album is what you can expect and the vocalist is a pretty typical modern punkrock singer. The playing time is pretty decent and that is good considering the simple nature of the songs, the risk is that prolonged exposure could introduce a sense of indifference.

The songs are very good; they are easy to take to and to like. I like the album but has to add the notation that it will feel a bit repetitive after hearing just a few times and one will most likely grow quite tired with it after a few plays. I would have liked a little more depth in the songs; many bands have proven that you can make apparent simple songs that have enough interesting slightly obscured details to keep the listener entertained for a very long time. I think that this is an album most won’t dislike but that probably will feel a bit indifferent to most people when they have heard the album a few times.

So the debut of the sparrows is a pretty good one, no doubt about that. But one might not want to play it too many times, especially not in a short timeframe. To me the title track, the first track and the one about the virus are probable the highlights initially but the more I hear it, the more I start to feel that it all blend together into a lake of uninterestingness. An album that is very good, but only if you take it in smaller doses – that is how this album can be summarised, use with caution.
