German trio Vargsheim gives us dreams for the sleepless, black metal infused with seventies rock influences. This is their third album and is said to have a striking cover art but the image they sent was mainly dark, but the one in the press info was clearer to see. The press info also claims that this would be one of the highlights of 2015, which I doubt as I have no good experience from the MDD-releases I have gotten this far. I actually feel a bit sorry for them, always dissing their albums or at least saying that they are nothing that is worth looking at. I hope to once receive an album that interests me from them. But I am sorry to say that this is not it.

This is a fairly typical modern black metal album, too focused on being fast and heavy meaning that the songs all blend together into a black mass of sound and noise. The production lacks finesse I would state and they do have that problem as most black metal bands to have: a completely uninteresting vocalist that doesn’t really do anything for the songs. And the album is too long to really hold my attention as well; the songs just are not good enough to really interest me.

Well, that last subordinate clause wasn’t entirely true, I think that there are some very interesting aspects of the songs and looking beneath all that noise the songs are actually quite good but it just isn’t possible to judge that by just listening casually to the album. My thinking is probably very flawed if you are a black metal fanatic but this site does not review music for black metal fanatics but for fans of rock and metal in general and those will not see this in any way that differs from mine.

There is no track that stands out and I think that this album, though having potential, is quite dull and uninteresting. Perhaps not a bad album and one that might appeal to the fan of modern black metal, but for the rest of us I believe it is an album that we need not concern ourselves with. Sorry Markus at MDD, this is unfortunately another one of your albums that doesn’t appeal to the Hallowed people.
