So, they are being described as something new, “a new musical phenomenon” is how the press release for the debut album of this grumpy Danish quartet is described. MotorBilly is what they call it and it is described as a mix between hardrock, heavy metal and rockabilly. Grumpynators are releasing their debut album with Wonderland but they are not entirely new they have been opening for famous Volbeat and played many shows and they have also managed two digital-only EPs during their existence.

They quartet’s music is groovy, catchy, straight to the point and so on. It is rockabilly but heavier and with elements of heavy metal and hardrock spicing it up. I don’t think it sounds much new, in concept it may be but when listening to it feels very familiar and not like the band is offering up anything that haven’t already been done. I also think that it is a very predictable album but it is very well produced and well performed, good energy and variation combined with a not too long playing time are also positive things. I believe that this album may work for a rather wide selection of people, it is fairly easy to take in and don’t really scare anyone off with undesirable qualities. I think that it can be described as a quality production.

It is a fairly good album; it is unfortunate that it doesn’t really take off. Maybe it is just too much rockabilly and too little metal, or maybe it is the other way round – but it sometimes feels a little bit half-hearted like it doesn’t quite know what leg to stand on. I think that the idea is better than the product in this case, I think that there is much potential in this kind of music, these guys just don’t quite nail it completely. I am not saying that it is poor or anything, I think that it is pretty good and just lacking in details, for one thing it is easy to take in but also very easy to grow tired with.

None of the songs really stand out and that is from both positive and negative perspective, it is plain and simply a good album but not one that will cement the band’s place in the books of history. But I shouldn’t say that the idea is without merit, they have much going for them and with some smaller changes we can see some amazing stuff from this band. Thy have already received some high praise for their music so I might be a bit wrong, this is possibly amazing. To me however, it is a good album but hardly one that will go down in musical history.
