Following seven nights of sin I guess these guys must be feeling slightly dead inside, hence the title of their second album Dead Inside. The Swedish quartet impressed last time out, this time they also have something to prove so will they be able to impress again? The cover artwork is a lot more impressive this time around anyway. The guys are older and probably wiser this time and they can possibly shake the feel of being fairly genre typical which was one remark I had last time around.

Well, not quite that, it is still fairly typical of the genre and in many regards it is fairly similar to what we heard the first time around. With some changes, the production is better this time. A very impressive soundscape, the darkness is pretty interesting and exciting. The vocals are exciting and they are very good, emoting to the songs in a brilliant way. They do many things right these guys, they thread their own path but still sound very much like an archetype of the genre. I could also wish for somewhat more variation but the short playing time negates this problem to the most part.

I would say that this is a very good album, Undecimber keeps asserting their position as a top name of the gothic metal genre. With deep haunting vocals and excellent melodies they impress and they do it quite a bit. If I have any negative it would be the lack of dynamics in the album because the songs are of an equal quality and paired with the lack of variation this makes the album feel a bit flat. Not flat so that you don’t want to listen to it because that isn’t what you want as it is an enjoyable journey through the dark innards of the soul.

They are both better and worse than their debut album, the sound is a lot better they have matured a lot in that area. But the top songs are not as good as they were on the debut and neither is the dynamics so there is still room for improvements but nonetheless it remains a really good album and yes they do impress this time around as well. One that I have to recommend for anyone who enjoys his or her gothic metal.
