Denmark’s god without anything to do are back, this time with an album called Rise. Murderer, Godless, Rise, one word titles on the albums, that’s cool. The album artwork is also quite cool and goes in line with what has come before. One has to start wondering if a story will eventually rise from the titles of the albums by Deus Otiousus. That would be an interesting evolvement and one that could not quite be expected from a classic death metal band who even has classic death metal in the title of their website. A website that is black by the way, but lets not move more away from this album, how about Rise?

It offers the same as before, if you don’t know what came before it is classic death metal. Kind of like you imagine that it sounds, kind of like the archetype of how the genre should sound. Big words, and true words. These danes has taken the classical death metal and made it how it should sound at its best. The vocals are brutal enough without getting silly, the riffs are heavy, the sound is extremely heavy. The production is surprisingly modern and the songs have a good drive to them, good energy and some hidden catchiness. Not that much variation but then again that’s the nature of the beast that is the death metal genre, it can’t be that much varied on an album. But it is short and to the point so you won’t bore to easily with it.

In fact, it is a very good album, perhaps not as good as the predecessor but a very solid release nonetheless. I think that the previous album was more diverse and interesting, it felt more exciting. This album is good but lacks that excitement, hence it is less interesting than the previous one. Still, I very much like this album, you can listen to it many times and not grow tired of it. And it offers just what you want from a classic death metal album, just what you can expect so no surprises for better or worse. If you know and like the band’s previous efforts, I am sure that you will find this one very appealing as well.

I wouldn’t say that anything is standing out from the rest on this album, in neither positive nor negative regard. It is a solid album from start to finish and I am sure it will appeal to the fans of the band and to fans of classic death metal. These danes has really grown into a force to be reckoned with in the death metal arena.
