A while ago Belgian band Vortigyn sent me their debut EP, a self titled piece with a grey and rather dreary looking cover artwork. Only three songs on it as well making it one of those really bothersome pieces to deal with as a writing and arranging a review of a fifteen minute EP takes the same amount of time as an hourlong album, so I was debating wether to skip this EP or not and the answer finally became not. I know not much about this band other than the fact that they are a quintet and female fronted, the EP was recorded some time 2012.

An EP which do not quite subscribe to the gothic styled piece that many female fronted rockers do, although they do have some elements of that like the grunts from a guy and so on. Only fifteen minutes of music, music that is catchy and well performed. Decently produced and the singer is a good female rock singer with a fairly classical type of voice for the genre. They also have managed to have a decent variation over the three tracks with the first being heavier with grunts and all, the second one has a spoken word part and the final one is toning it all down towards the end.

I think this is a fairly good EP, nothing earth shattering or anything like that but it works very well I would say. The songs are good and catchy, you take to them at once. The second track Words has a spoken word part, I don’t think that was such a good idea, it definitely decreases the quality of the song. The ending is a bit forgetful, you never really find your way into it. The first one is great, catchy and what this band should be more about. The album is good and likeable.

I can conclude that it is a good debut, it shows potential and quality. I think there is much more to come from this band in the future, this EP is quite good but nothing that will find its way to the history books, unless… they become really famous along the way of their career. Perhaps you should remember the name Vortigyn, I got the EP in the mail and who knows it may be the first step in something great. It is not impossible, I think I can hear some potential for that greatness.
