Strange name, Tritton. It does not seem to mean anything, Tritton. Unless of course it is a misspelling of Triton, the father of Ariel in The Little Mermaid movie. They are a mexican quintet, Mexico is most known for many murders and drug cartels and other than that I do not know much about Mexico and haven’t heard many band from there so this is interesting. The logo looks of heavy metal and the cover art has a nice colour scheme, not very pretty though. A female and male singer and the founders are said to have been playing together for around fifteen years and before Tritton was in a band called Dracko whom I doubt any of you have ever heard of. I wonder why such things are even mentioned, known bands with a few albums behind them is alright but a demo band is kind of pointless. But what shall we say about these mexicans then? It is one of very few, possibly the only mexican band I have reviewed.

Their music can be described as something who takes a lot of inspiration from NWOBHM, a bit of blues and a bit old school rock. But with a female singer and a male singer, that is a tad different. First I thought it was recorded somewhere in the early eighties, the sound is a bit old or maybe unmodern if we are to use another word. It sounds like they might have ordered something of a cheap production. The variation over the album is quite average for a heavy metal album but it is a quite short album so the likelihood of getting bored with it is fairly small. Not the most unique thing ever either but the male-female vocals are a bit of a different touch so there is something.

It starts really well with Wanton War which is the album’s best song, strong with good melody and chorus. The rest of the songs are good but nothing really that special and the production as a whole is a bit of a turnoff. I think they should have gone a bit of an extra mile to bring out a production that doesn’t sound dated even before they release their album. Other than a sound that can’t please anyone, I would say that this is a fairly good album with a good musicianship and all of that. With all the drug money in Mexico one would think that it would be possible to afford a good production, but then again that money is probably only for the drug cartels and the mexican politicians.

Tritton’s Face of Madness is musically a fairly safe choice and it even sounds like the tried and tested NWOBHM, the question is though, do we really need that kind of music today? I don’t think so, I think musicians who look back rather than forwards are generally quite boring. This album works alright though, the songs are good and the album has some strong points so for a big fan or a nostalgic, this album will probably work really well. Too bad about the production, this could have been excellent.
