Schysma is an italian progressive metal band founded by Martina Bellini and Georgia Di Paola who where both part of a band called Purpleknights which shortly after their collaboration in writing stuff that didn’t suit that band fell apart. That gave room for the birth of Schysma which was completed in 2011 according to information I found. This is their debut, a five track EP which plays for just short of half an hour.

Progressive metal in five tracks, the music is complex in a way but not so much in structure and choruses but there are some progressive elements here and there. They remind me a bit of genre giants Dream Theater, maybe not as strong as said band but well produced and well performed nonetheless. I think the singer is quite good as well and carries the songs in a good way. As is common with progressive metal there is a good deal of variation in the EP, it is not one piece you will be bored with because of it being to long or too complex. I’d say you have to bore easily to be bored with this little EP.

It is a good EP, very good I would say. It is an impressive production that I enjoy listening to. It is complex enough to keep you interested for a long time but still simple enough to take in rather fast. It is an EP that stands to be played many times, and it doesn’t have any real weaknesses. Sure, there could be more songs that stand out in the grander scheme of things as there aren’t really any major hit song on this album. Sure, the opening track is excellent but the rest are just strong songs but none of them isn’t really strong enough to want you to play the album all the time.

l think this is not only a good debut, it is a good EP. Sure there are many things they can improve to upcoming releases so this is not only a good EP it is also a very promising debut because who knows what they are capable of when everything falls into place for them. So, do you like progressive metal or Dream Theater? if the answer is yes I suggest that you take a closer look at this EP.
